This video links together all the gifs from the GRAND DESSEIN project, 1 through 5.

By Lillian-Yvonne Bertram and commissioned by the late Jenni Baker for Container (acontainer.co) as part of their Multitudes series, Grand Dessein is a Rolodex card file repurposed into a meditation on the poetics of “found-ness”. The 280 cards create a recursive surreal juxtaposition of found poems and poetics from the diaries of Paul Klee on the nature of art and writing. The cards also include cut out segments of sketches from the diaries; discarded photographs found in a box on a street in Baltimore; Ikea furniture assembly instructions; the author’s own poems, and found wallpaper scraps. Some text on the cards is handwritten and others are stamped using letter stamps and ink. The individual paper cards were then dipped in melted beeswax, completing the piece’s overall handmade feel and unique aroma. Grand Dessein was acquired by the Special Collections library of St. Lawrence University.

Featured in POÈME SBJKT, an exhibition of works of literature both on and off the blockchain that enhance, reinvent, and reimagine the relationship between text and image, analog and digital, blurring and challenging the lines that seek to divide.

POÈME SBJKT was curated by theVERSEverse in partnership with L’Avant Galerie Vossen and took place at Librairie Métamorphoses from May 25 – July 15, 2023.

A collaboration between poet Lillian-Yvonne Bertram and artist Dina Chang, Chang’s visuals provide a stunning photographic take on Bertram’s poem “The Body Deformed by Tidal Forces.” The poem is a muscular lyrical meditation on the physics of tidal forces that simultaneously create solidity and changes of season through rotation and gravitational push/pull and threaten destruction when the same forces of these rotating celestial bodies are brought into too close a contact to sustain their individual integrities. The same phenomenon, Bertram suggests, literally and figuratively applies to earth-bound human bodies and the ways people too are bound to an ungodly planet spinning ferociously through the cosmos.

Lillian-Yvonne Bertram x Dina Chang

The Body Deformed by Tidal Forces

Darkness still here, hunkered against the trees.
Spring so uneasy this year.
No matter morning’s boundary culling our bodies,
another romantic passage assaults us!
O limp future centered on this body!
In the model solar system, planets suspend & twirl
as if from a spider’s whirl.
The quantum in backpedal, in decline, spring so un-
gripping this year. Bored mouth. Bored fingers.
The umpteenth day/night running like such—
truly, truly—this troubling with physics!
Not still winter, not yet anything.

O thuggish awakening.
All planets but this one were named after gods.
