I saw you

reading “Perfume” by Patrick Süskind in July of 1997 on the Cours Mirabeau in Aix at Les Deux Garçons. You were wearing all black, except for your shoes, which were impossibly red and too tall to be comfortable. You had such dexterous hands—alternating between smoking a Vogue and sipping an espresso, your fingers following your progress of “Perfume” with the other. You were so engaged in your book, you never looked up at me. But I wanted to say to you then, from afar, “you are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.” I still think about you when I re-read “Perfume” each summer.
